Russ Weaver in cold-weather kit, Afghanistan, 2007

Full Biography

Twenty-one years in uniform.
One story he had to tell.

Russ Weaver spent twenty-one years in active military service in the United States Army before retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He served as both a general dentist and an orthodontist, but his most formative assignment wasn't in a clinic. It was in the field.

Assigned to a special operations support unit, he deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, providing medical support to operators in one of the most demanding combat environments in the world. That experience became the foundation of everything he would later write: the culture of small teams operating under impossible pressure, the weight of decisions made in seconds, the loyalty that holds men together when everything else is falling apart.

The idea for the Bion Series came from an unlikely place: a tour of the Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio, Texas, one of the nation's premier rehabilitation facilities for combat-wounded veterans. Walking through its prosthetics and rehabilitation labs, he watched first-generation cybernetic technology restoring movement and sensation to soldiers who had lost limbs in combat. The technology was extraordinary. But the questions it raised were more extraordinary still.

He now practices orthodontics in private practice and writes military science fiction under his publishing imprint, Valor Bound Books. The name reflects what he believes: the obligation to serve, and to tell the truth about service, doesn't end when the uniform comes off.

The Origin

"I was walking through the Center for the Intrepid, watching prosthetics restore what IEDs had taken, and I found myself thinking: we're already building the first cybernetic soldiers. Not in science fiction. Right now.

And I asked myself: what will it be like for real people to deal with cybernetics in reality, not fiction?"

The Work

What the Bion Series Is Really About

The Bion Series is grounded in real questions emerging from real technology and real service.

Cybernetic augmentation

Inspired by cutting-edge work at institutions like the Center for the Intrepid, where combat-wounded veterans are receiving first-generation prosthetic and sensory replacements that blur the line between human and machine. The Bion soldier is the logical, terrifying next step.

The cost of service

Not the mythology of military heroism, but its reality: what it does to the people who carry it, and to the families who wait for them. Each book follows Kedron Trent not only as a commander but as a husband, a father, and a man trying to remain one.

Trust and betrayal

In small-unit special operations, the bond between teammates is the most load-bearing structure in a soldier's life. The Bion Series puts that bond under pressure that goes beyond the battlefield.

Special operations culture

The small-unit leadership, the weight of command, the loyalty that holds teams together under impossible pressure. Written by someone who served in that environment.
